About the Event:
In 2018, Maya co-founded underbelly: The Journal on the Practical Magic of Poetic Revision. She has taught at Emory University and Northwestern University. She holds fellowships from MacDowell, Cave Canem, Vermont Studio Center, and elsewhere. Her writing has been widely published. She works as an editor for Haymarket Books, and as an assistant professor of English and Creative Writing at Adelphi University.
Inviting Wonder: Approaching the Familiar from the Opposite Side
In this 90-minute generative workshop we will read and discuss poems that bend our understanding of composition. Then we’ll begin to write our own using a diction and image exercise that may spark for you a new way to see the practice of making poems.
RICHARD ALLEN TAYLOR is the author of four poetry collections, most recently Letters to Karen Carpenter and Other Poems (Main Street Rag Publishing Company, 2023). His poems, articles and reviews have appeared in Rattle, Comstock Review, The Pedestal, Iodine Poetry Journal, Running with Water, Wild Goose Poetry Review, Litmosphere, Gyroscope Review and Aeolian Harp, among others. A Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net nominee, Taylor formerly served as president of Charlotte Writers Club and Director of Adult Contests for North Carolina Poetry Society. For many years he served as review editor for The Main Street Rag and co-editor of Kakalak. He and his Kakalak co-editors were honored as recipients of the Irene Blair Honeycutt Legacy Award in 2016 for service to the writing community. After retiring from his business career, he earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Queens University of Charlotte and now resides in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
